It's been a little while since my last post. 
I've been moving fabrics to clear a set of drawers that I was borrowing from my brother. 
Lots of material there!  I guess I'll have to use it up somehow... (insert knowing look here as plushie patterns are eyeballed)

I was awakened around 3 in the morning, by a barking in the yard.  Fox or coyote, I couldn't say.  Probably coyote, since foxes tend to shriek more than bark. 
I shooed it away with a powerful spotlight I have, and made another discovery.  Out in the woods  behind my barn, a doe was curled up with a newborn fawn!

It was a pretty special moment.

The Quarter - and Doll Eyes

Years ago when we were kids, I went to visit my cousin and she was upset. 
"Some guys gave me a quarter and said 'here's a quarter, go buy yourself a life..." 
I thought it over, then told her. "So why are you upset?  Those idiots gave you a free quarter!"


The moral - Take a step back and see who came away with more.



As for plush business, I experimented with making my own eyes out of polymer clay.  I rolled them so that I could cut the rolls for identical eye slivers. 
It worked great in theory, but I hadn't worked out how they would attach.  I tried making some into buttons, which warped the shape slightly. 
Then the final test, sewing them onto a doll came.  In short, the poor thing looks like a deformed muppet.

I'm going to keep trying though, I also don't think these eyes are the safest for kids since a good tug right now could pull one off. 
Until I perfect the idea, these will strictly be used for art dolls until I get one to work the way I want them to.

I've also created molds for stuffed animal noses, and will be making my noses available at some point. 
I'm still working out some kinks.

Fat Dragon Pattern

I forgot to say that if you add the ears/horns, you'll want to fold them under when you sew the top of the head on.  They remain hidden until the plush is turned out. 
If you use a material that is only one sided, be sure to take then into account and either have the top side facing out, or fold it over so that it is double sided.  

Same with the tail.  If you use the forked edge, just turn the tips inward so they'll show when you turn it out.

I have not yet made a part two for this tutorial.  But it's pretty simple.
With the underside pinned on and the back left open, (but pinned to hold it in place), just sew the underside onto the top parts. 
Remember, I clubbed the feet, so don't bother cutting and sewing toes unless you're more ambitious than me. 

Underside is now sewn into place, plush is turned out

That's it!  Turn him out, sew on your spikes/ridges/whatever (same way you did the ears), stuff him, sew the back shut, and sew on your wings. 
All that's left after that is to decorate your dragon.  googly eyes, fabric paints, and beads work great.

Now your dragon is finished and ready to go make some friends!

Fat Dragon Introduction

A while back, I decided to make my own pattern.  I went with a dragon, since I'm a fan of the Dragonriders of Pern books.  Because of that, the dragon quickly became a firelizard. 

For those unfamiliar with Pern, a firelizard is an arm length dragon with the ability to teleport. 

But being new to pattern design, I didn't take into consideration the fact that the underside shouldn't be as wide as the top.  Thus, the fat dragon was born-er, hatched.

What Are Cats Saying?

My family recently took in Blanche, a beautiful white cat whose family moved and could not take her along. 
For the most part, Blanche settled in fine, but she was not keen on one thing.  Actually, four things. 
Barney, Piewacket, Poe, and Hekate.  My other cats.


After much flirting and negotiating, the big male, Barney weaseled his way into Blanche's space.  Mostly by crying at her when she growled at him.

This morning, Barney was happily rubbing his face in Blanche's catnip stash, when she came into the room. 
Barney froze in his tracks, looked over, and asked her cautiously "Meow?"
"Mew."  Blanch confirmed.
"Meow..." Barney acknowledged sadly, watching as Blanche carefully made her way to her food dish, putting as much space between her and him as possible.
Soon, Blanche was having her fill as Barney moved himself onto my bed.  Nevermind that it's been pouring and he is dripping wet...

Still, as long as there are no cat yowls filling the air, I consider it a peaceful encounter.
Maybe tomorrow, Blanche will give Barney more than a one syllable response.
